An incredible fashion moment took place this afternoon at the lvmh headquarters on avenue montaigne in paris that saw seven artistic directors of the group’s big luxury houses (humberto leon for kenzo, marc jacobs for marc jacobs, riccardo tisci for givenchy, karl lagerfeld for fendi, nicolas ghesquière for louis vuitton, raf simons for christian dior and phoebe philo for céline) reunited alongside jean-paul claverie, pierre-yves roussel and the initiator of the project, delphine arnault, to declare the winner of the inaugural lvmh prize from amongst 12 finalists. the victor was young london-based canadian, thomas tait, who takes home a grant of 300,000 euros and personal mentoring that will help towards developing his brand. the jury also decide to award two special prizes (worth 100,000 euros plus a year of mentorship for each) to labels miuniku and hood by air, and praised three young fashion school graduates (peter do, teruhiro hasegawa and flavien juan nunez) giving them access to the studios of three big fashion houses respectively (céline, givenchy and christian dior) for one year, as well as 10,000 euros apiece. interviews:nicolas ghesquière:it is really enjoyable; it is brilliant to be here and to take another look at all the talent that i saw a few weeks ago, to have a second look at their work to determine who will win today but in any case, i feel that everybody who has been a part of this selection will gain something from this competition.marc jacobs:i just like to see what different designers have to say and what they are doing and just trying to understand their concept, look at their fabrics, silhouettes and the message they are sending and just try to understand and then see what speaks to me the most.humberto leon:i am just looking at the spirit of the collection and just seeing the hand and the choice of fabrics and a little bit of everything and the personality of the designer.phoebe philo:i thought thomas was very interesting, i think there is a sophistication to his ideas and i very much enjoyed his presentation when he talked about his ideas and explained a little bit who he is and i think from what i understand, his company is very small and he really will benefit from the mentoring and the money that this prize will give him.music free of right/bandit&nikit 2012
